Oh no, Google Reader is being retired!

I’ve been a happy user of Google Reader for years, but apparently I was one of a shrinking number of folks using it. I tried many RSS readers over the years, but I liked the simplicity of Google Reader and that it was web-based, with my subscriptions always in sync. Today, Google announced that Reader is being terminated July 1, 2013. I guess I’m in the market for another web-based RSS reader. I’ll have to start looking around at options. This was a great service, and I’m sorry to see it go…

Ideas?

Me too. Very disappointed – Google Reader was my go-to every day, on my desktop and on my phone. I’d like to know if there is a suitable replacement.

Must admit, this news hit me big time. I’ve been with Google Reader since the dawn of man (well, maybe that’s a slight exaggeration… at least since the Industrial revolution).

I’m wondering what will happen to the Reeder App? I started using that extensively in recent times… Impending update, I hope, to cater for other online feed readers…

I really used Google Reader Extensively 🙁

I knew that Google was trying to get rid of the product just to enhance that Google+ of theirs (which I found to be completely of no use).

However as of today there are no real alternatives because other services are either desktop based or just too bad to use.

I hope Google gets some sense and lets the reader live.

You should give Feed Fiend a try. It has a feed directory with a one-click subscribe feature, and it is web-based so you can read your feeds from anywhere. The focus is on simplicity, without the flashy buttons. Go check it out at http://feedfiend.com.

    Joel,

WordPress.com has just opened up its Reader to non WordPress blogs as well.

And as far as I know, you can easily get an account on WordPress.com, if you dont have one already…

Check it out and let me know if it measures up

    Cheers
    Mihir
